Configuring emai alerts out of the box?

Hello,

I have installed SOMS 2007 R2 onto a test domain and network. I am wanting to test the email alerts, such as when a node goes down, or a drive hits a certain space usage. My problem is I cannot see where to configure this?  I have installed SOMS, but not really configured anything else with it.  I have read quite a few pages on technet, but I guess I am just missing where this is done.  I tired adding a subscirber with my email address, but nothing happened when the server went down.  What do I need to do?

Thanks!
