Microsoft is asking what people think of the new MP catalog on PinPoint. What are your opinions? (link below)

Hey guys, I myself think it is okay, but only if I go there by the old link to the Pack Catalog. Trying to search and filter on PinPoint is not very nice.

Thanks!

While "mixed reviews" is a fair statement, I think mixed with a lean in the negative direction by the discussions I've had. This could be due to the fact that it is different rather than whether it's better or worse. For me, my thoughts on the new management pack catalog on PinPoint depend on how I get to the catalog.

When I browsed there using the old System Center Pack Catalog link  (HERE), everything was fine because all the filtering is done for me. I get a page scoped to Management Packs, with product -specific filtering links on the right.

On the other hand, if I just go to PinPoint.microsoft.com, trying to find the is System Center Pack Catalog much more difficult.

Just my 2 cents...

I think Tommy's assessment is fair. And in support of Microsoft on this one, sometimes you have to take a step "sideways" (to a different platform) in order to move forward. As long as I use the existing System Center Pack Catalog link, it's not ideal, but functional today.

My primary wish is quick and easy sorting by a combination of the following criteria:

  • Product to be monitored
  • Vendor
  • Price Range
  • Platform(s) (SCOM 2007, R2, etc)

That's my 2 cents...

My main wish would be to be able to search and filter and sort by:

- Released Date

- MP Version

Oh, and my modest opinion is that the issue is not what platform you use - the new site is nice BUT I feel that most users did not really want a new shiny web site...

they would have been content with the MPNotifier.xml being updated, or some RSS feed, or a twitter bot, or some other notification method such as what we discussed here too http://systemcentercentral.com/tabid/60/indexId/39248/tag/Forums/Default.aspx

People who are complaining probably just wanted it to be kept as simple as possible.

But I suspect that, since checking for new versions "is built in the R2 console", that has to be the "official" notification method; even if that method lets people download and install MPs "blindly" - that is, without really knowing what they bring in, without testing and without reading the associated DOCs...

Most people (those sysadmins that I speak to, anyway) just wanted to be notified when a NEW MP is out --> at that point they CAN decide to import it blindly and automagically, or they CAN ALSO go the extra mile and read the docs and test it in a test environment first, read the docs, look at the XML, and so on...

Speaking of DOC, it would be awesome if MS stops to deliver the MPs as MSI files and provide a zip with all the files and a separate link to the documentation. It's really annoying to download and install the MP to get to the DOC.

The R2 feature to install the MP directly in the MG is cool but lacks this doc. The UI should expose this link so that everyone installing the MP directly into the MG can view the DOC with a simple click in the import dialog.

Just my 2 cents...

Hi Daniele! I wanted to clarify my platform comment. I am not suggesting users wanted a new platform, but rather that since Microsoft moved the catalog to the new site, there may be good reasons for doing so. Whether the old catalog was based on some aging technology, or lacked the features and flexibility to achieve some future catalog functionality goals,  I suspect the move to PinPoint likely has some greater strategic value.

I would think everyone finds it a bit surprising that the catalog hasn't had an RSS feed for some years by now. I did find it surprising the catalog moved from one page without a feed to another page without a feed. For me, notification in the console is good, agree the feed would be nice too.

I absolutely agree with Stefan, we need to make sure documentation is adequately obvious and accessible with the MP download into a live environment is a must have.

The 'Narrow My Results' option doesn't quite deliver the options I would like, but is a step in the right direction in allowing filtering of results. I want to see product, price and licensing in the filtering options and search results so I can easily search to find a solution for my problem and my budget.

Nobody likes to spend time trying to get the SRP pricing and licensing information from a bunch of different vendors. Transparency would be a good thing for competition and convenience.

I would like RSS, but the new site is about what the old pack catalog looked like if I use the System Center Pack Catalog link.

Ditto on documentation.

Ditto on the filtering options.

Tommy is spot on I think as with most websites and catalogs it should be all about simplicity. A customer should find what he is looking for in a couple of clicks. Proper filtering is crucial.

ZIP instead of MSI, Yes! Although I think documenation should be part of the download. Now already we see people skipping the documentation to often and finding themselves into trouble when it doesn't deliver the results they expected. When it is included it's not a garanty but at least they looked at them when opening the zip ;-)

As directly import into your environment agree there should be some step to point people to the documentation. It is just not as simple as import and of you go ;-)

Just my 3 cents....

I most agree with the feedback suggesting an rss feed for the catalog and more granular filtering options for the new catalog. I believe the catalog view itself is okay for me since search functions are similar to the original catalog.

It also seems somewhat odd to me that the SCOM R2 feature allowing direct import of the packs does not prompt the user with a warning that suggests testing as well.

I'm glad to see the search function works. but like others have stated above, version #s and release dates should be visible and sortable from the main page. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with most of the other negative comments: it really needs the ability to sort by release date. 99% of the time I go to the catalog is to look and see if there are any new MPs. My OpsMgr console can't get to catalog because of our proxy.

I stopped going to PinPoint and just rely on people in my OpsMgr RSS feeds to tell me when new MPs are released.

Ditto on most of the comments. I find the PinPoint site dreadful. I also only used the old site to keep up on MP's. Each week I would hit the site, download the new MP's, extract the docs, run xml diff (or now MP diff - yeah!!). I will just rely on the other rss feeds from the community to get notifications on new MP's. My clients rarely ever used the site with most never hearing of it but rely on us and the community for MP recommendations. As such I always saw the sites function as tech facing not client facing.

Bottom line - old way took one click to see the info I needed and it did not increase my blood pressure; new way takes numerous other clicks to get the same info and increases my blood pressure. I imlpore MS to keep it simple even if only to extend the life of the small group of experienced SCOM consultants that exist in the community. :)
