After struggling with an installation of SQL 2005 which I have found in the past to be fairly straight forward, I have learned that there is a critical prerequisite that isn’t checked during the SQL 2005 setup that has to due with having Office 2007 on your server. If you want to install SQL Server 2005 on a server with Office 2007 (I realize that this isn’t very common), you may receive the following error:
ERROR 1706 Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network, or CD ROM! For other potential solutions to this problem, see c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\1033\Setup.chm
To resolve this, you must download and install the Office 2003 web components first and then install SQL Server 2005.
