SCC BLOGGING TIPS: How to save online drafts and schedule future posts with Windows Live Writer

I’ve received these questions a few times from community members here at System Center Central, so I thought I would explain how these can be achieved.

System Center Central has been designed to support the advanced publishing capabilities of WordPress, which includes the capabilities to save blog posts in progress (so end users cannot see them) and come back to them later to finish. Additionally, the site supports scheduling blog posts for a future date.

What is Windows Live Writer?

Windows Live Writer is one of the most popular, functional and user-friendly multi-platform blog editors available. You can download Windows Live Writer for free at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8621.

#1 – How can I save drafts online to finish later?

The answer lies in the Save menu of Windows Live Writer. When you select Save, you will find two options:

  • Post draft to blog – This saves a draft online you can come back to later
  • Post draft and edit online – This saves a draft online and opens the native WordPress web interface. The site will prompt you to authenticate before opening the article.

To open the article, use the Open recent post menu option, where you will see recently published posts, as well as your draft articles.

#2 – How can I schedule posts to be published in the future

The Set post date option near the upper left of the Live Writer interface you will see the Set post date option.

Pick your date and set time using the calendar picker.

I hope these tips are helpful to those who asked.
