MS Private Cloud and the new “Datacenter Stack” unveiled at MMS 2011

Anyone who attended any of the sessions in the “Cloud Track” (unofficial name) at the Microsoft Management Summit (MMS 2011), you learned about the System Center 2012 offerings currently in the development pipeline scheduled for release later this year. Several breakout sessions by several different speakers presented a new representation of the layers of software and infrastructure involved in the management and delivery of virtualization, more specifically Infrastructure as a Service / Private Cloud. The stack presented in most of the private cloud and virtualization sessions included a couple of layers not present at last years conference:

Clarifying the Layers

The function of most of these layers are self-evident, but there are a few here that deserve some clarification:

  • Administrative / Tenant Interfaces – This is two of the tenants of a Private Cloud architecture – specifically 1) self-service provisioning and 2) metering (chargeback). This role is filled by VMM Self-Service Portal 2.0 [today]), Silverlight Self-Service UI (codename Concero [future]), and Service Manager (which can provide self-service with the right workflows and a little help from Opalis)
  • Orchestration Layer – This layer represents the automation capabilities enabled through Opalis Integration Server [today]),  System Center Orchestrator [future]
  • Automation Layer – This layer represents scripting technologies, such as PowerShell, WS Management, WMI

Roadmap

The System Center 2012 roadmap (presented at MMS 2011) includes numerous releases delivering the future of the MS Private Cloud offering, all coming in late 2011 (shown below). 2H C11 translates to “2nd half of calendar year 2011”. The product we heard the least of was System Center Orchestrator, but with a target release in 2H C11, no doubt we’ll be seeing more soon.
