Ran across a strange issue with Hyper-v this past week when building out a new lab environment. When I attempted to take a snapshot of one of my hyper-v R2 vm’s I received the following general access denied message.
Turns out that this was a permissions issue. This was easily resolved by opening Windows Explorer and navigating to the parent folder that contained my vm image and looking on the Security tab.
What I quickly noticed is that the Virtual Machines ACL didn’t have any permissions granted to it. I edited the permissions and granted the Virtual Machines ACL full control and tried taking the snapshot again and voila… success.
