Day 100: Series Wrap-up for the “100 Days of DevOps”

It’s hard to believe the 100 Days of DevOps with PowerShell series is coming to completion (almost). It’s been a long round since we began in Summer 2014, and keeping on task has not been without it’s challenges.

Within the series we covered several themes related to DevOps and PowerShell. In this, the final installment, I’ve done my best to break out the content by theme to help you focus on the areas most interesting and most relevant to your work. Enjoy!

NOTE: Illness, holidays and work have us behind in a couple of spots, so only 93 of the 100 days are complete thus far. I expect we’ll fill in the gaps in the next few days.

The “100 Days of DevOps Series” by Topic

Here are a few of the high level areas covered in the 100 Days of DevOps series, with the installments sorted for you below.

  • PowerShell DSC – from Basic to Advanced
  • Cross-Platform Management and DevOps with DSC and Chef
  • Package Deployment
  • Azure PaaS (Cloud Services, Websites and SQL) for IT Pros
  • Source Control and Unit Testing Integration and Automation for IT Pros (TFS, VSO and GIT)
  • System Center and DevOps
  • Amazon EC2 and PowerShell

Browse the content for each of these high level areas in the sections below.

PowerShell DSC – from Basic to Advanced

PowerShell DSC is still rapidly evolving, and documentation of  best practices and advanced operations not fully explored. Scott, Ryan and I explored PowerShell DSC concepts from basic to advanced within the 100 Days series.

Cross-Platform Management and DevOps with DSC and Chef

Ryan contributed a great cross-platform series, covering UNIX and Linux management with both PowerShell DSC and Chef. If you have UNIX and Linux systems to manage in your environment, you need to read through these 20 installments of the series.

Package Deployment

Luke offered some guidance on how to get started with OneGet and PowerShellGet in these installments.

Azure PaaS (Cloud Services, SQL and Websites) for IT Pros

I did my best to introduce IT Pros to the components of Azure I suspect they are least familiar with, Azure Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) with coverage of Azure Websites, Cloud Services and SQL.

Source Control and Unit Testing Integration and Automation for IT Pros (TFS, VSO and GIT)

Source control and continuous deployment are core components of any DevOps strategy. Team Foundation Server, Visual Studio Online and GIT all received mention in the series thanks to Mickey, with a little assist from me on GIT.

System Center and DevOps

System Center plays a critical role in supporting DevOps from a management perspective, and was not ignored in the 100 Days series. Here are a few installments including mention of System Center 2012.

Amazon EC2 and PowerShell

Luke did some great work, drilling down into Amazon EC2 deployment and management.

Conclusion

DevOps is going to be a key area for IT Pros to focus on to remain relevant as hybrid and public cloud computing become more and more pervasive in the enterprise. The series was a lot of work, but at the same time very rewarding for us. We hope you enjoy reading the series as much as we did writing it for you! As fellow IT Pros, we wish you much success on your journey to mastering DevOps!
