Every once in a while, I get to see a technology that makes me say "Wow!" and this demo from Edwin was one of those moments. He spent most of his time in System Center Virtual Machine Manager, showing me how it could manage Hyper-V, Virtual Server and even Vmware virtual machines from the same console. He showed me how it uses PRO tips to automate tasks based on certain conditions. He showed me the integration with System Center Operations Manager. He showed me that everything that you do through the UI actually just spawns PowerShell commands, and how you can expose those commands to create your own scripts and automation.
He also gave me a sneak peek at two never before seen features - Live Migration of VM's and Hyper-V server.
really cool stuff!

When I met with Edwin to go over the new features in Virtual Machine Manager, he had some other really cool stuff he wanted to show me - so cool we weren't really sure if we were allowed to show it yet.
Word is out though now, so I'm gonna go ahead and let you see this sneak peek at Hyper-V Server and Live Migration.
Think of Hyper-V Server as just an operating system stub that allows you to run virtual machines - no requirement for a full host OS just to run VMs.
Live Migration provides fault tolerant virtual machines with no downtime when failing over to other clustered hosts. It's a really cool feature, and one many customers have asked for. Check it out!

Web and Podcasts: System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 RTM!

http://edge.technet.com/Media/System-Center-Virtual-Machine-Manager-2008-RTM/

RTM = Release To Manufacturing. It means the product is done and the binaries have been sent to the CD printer.

SCVMM = System Center Virtual Machine Manager. Integrated, multi-vendor management for virtual environments, including Virtual Server, Hyper-V and VMware ESX. VMM 2008 also includes a new feature, Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) which enables customers to dynamically manage the performance of their virtual hosts and guests. It provides optimization awareness down to the workload level enabling customers to take either manual or automated remedial action once an unhealthy or inefficient machine state is identified.

Ok, what’s new in this version? Well, a couple of things:

· Now manages Hyper-V, including Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and the new Hyper-V Server 2008

· Now manages VMWare – if you can do it in the VMWare console, you can do it in SCVMM

· New key features: Cluster support, Delegated Administration and resource optimization with PRO

Can I get an eval copy? Sure. You can download it today here: System Center Virtual Machine Manager

I spent some time with Andrew Lee of HP and Jorke Odolphi of Microsoft to show me the hardware and the configuration that made up the infrastructure.

I recently sat down with David Mills and Edwin Yuen, who got together for a brief discussion of Microsoft’s IT management and virtualization solution for midsize businesses. With the release of public betas for System Center Essentials 2010 and Data Protection Manager 2010, customers will have the capability to easily manage, backup and restore their physical and virtual servers in an integrated way.
After discussing the benefits of using Hyper-v, SCE 2010 and DPM 2010, Edwin gives us a quick demo of SCE 2010’s integrated virtual and physical management capabilities.

http://edge.technet.com/Media/From-Application-to-Infrastructure-Automating-Deployment/

This screencast demonstrates how close we are to implementing a dynamic datacenter with current, released products. It shows how the SML models generated by Visual Studio can be parsed by Powershell, which then uses the information to deploy virtual machines for the required infrastructure out of a template library. The library and placement are managed by System Center. Powershell is also used to deploy the application modules on the virtual infrastructure and configure them.

In summary, you can automate the deployment of an application and its infrastructure without touching a server.
