One of the very cool new features coming in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is??dynamic memory??provisioning for virtual machines.??In this interview, Vijay Tewari explains how this model works, and gave me a demo of it in action.

So this is still using only available physical memory and not usering overcommit feature of other hypervisors? Cool if it is using only physical memory.

It seems like there would have to be some overcommit when setting the maximum. 

 

If I had 8 Gigs of RAM and 2 VMs and let each VM fluctuate between 1 and 4 Gigs, I might as well just give each machine 4 and be done with it.  This makes it sound like you could have 8 Gigs of RAM and set 4 VMs to each fluctuate between 1 and 4 Gigs.  If all 4 machines were running, maybe all 4 would take 2 Gigs, or if one was getting hammered, it would take 4 Gigs and the other 3 would each take 1 Gig.

 

Overall this is a completely awesome feature and something that had annoyed me about VMs for a while.  You were always forced to overallocate RAM, just like you would a physical server, just to be safe.  Now you don't need to do that any more.  It should let you put more VMs per physical machine and let them fight it out for RAM.  As long as you have a good mix of VMs on each physical box you should be fine.

It is always nice to hear Mark speaking, because he is great professional and speaker. I agree with him about not rushing into next version of the OS, x64, and about drivers. VHD is also good feature of W7.

1- Office 2007 docs crashing suddenly
2- Sync Center does not recognize my handheld, and thereofre, cannot build a new partnership with my laptop.

For a beta of a OS Update bugs on this small of a magnitude sound pretty good.

I mounted a VHD in my Windows 7 Boot manager and it worked great.  Additionally, I was able to boot that same VHD in Virtual PC, as long as a hard another VHD as primary of it to serve as it's Boot Manager.  Of course, I still have to sysprep to switch from the Physical Hardware to the Virtual PC virtual hardware.  I miss hardware profiles.  I wish Windows had a Default Virtual PC hardware profile.

How do I suggest this to Microsoft?

I would also like to figure out how to replicate the above Physical Boot (Windows 7 Boot Manager) and Virtual Boot (Virtual PC or Server) with Windows XP as the virtualized OS.  Since the Windows Boot Manger allows the addition of a VHD and the addition of a NTLoader entry but not the combination of the two, I didn't see an easy way to have an WinXP VM. 

If I make any progress, I'll reply again or post to http://nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu/~rbache/blog/index.html.

SCVMM Self-Service Portal with Laptop Part 1 of 4: Overview, Rapid-Prototyping of

A Self-Service Portal is basically a Web site to be installed on a web server with ASP.NET, IIS6 Metabase Compatibility, and IIS6 WMI Compatibility Server Role Services. By accessing the Self-Service Portal, authorized users can create and operate their own virtual machines (VMs) as permitted by??each user's??User Roles, while the created VMs are placed in a Library Server managed by the System Center Virtual Machine Manager, or SCVMM. A User Role here is essentially a policy??with??membership, authorized hardware and software profiles, allowed scope of operations, and assigned templates??applicable for creating and manageing??VMs using Self-Service Portal. In a Self-Service Portal session, an authorized user sees only those virtual machines that the user owns??or??is authorized to??operate upon.??And as a VM is created or deleted by a user, the user's quota points are subtracted or regained with the amount of quota points that the VM is??assigned in an employed template. Once a user has quota points fewer than??what are??needed for creating a new VM, the user has reached the maximal number of VMs allowable for the applicable??User Role to create.

The system requirements of components for constructing a Self-Service Portal include

To prototype a Self-Service Portal using a laptop, here are the steps:

  1. Install Windows Server 2008 in a laptop and enable Hyper-V Server Role
  2. Create VMs and construct a domain environment
  3. Install SCVMM on a target VM in the domain
  4. Optionally join the laptop into the domain
  5. In SCVMM admin console, add the laptop as a host in the Active Directory Domain
  6. In laptop, create a network share for later sharing VM resources like sysprep generalized images, iso files, disks, etc.
  7. In SCVMM admin console, add the laptop as a Library Server with the network share
  8. In SCVMM admin console, create hardware/software profiles and template, as needed
  9. In SCVMM admin console, create User Roles??and add??members
  10. Install Self-Service Portal from SCVMM media on a target web server and associate the Self-Service Portal with the SCVMM (this step may be included in step??3 if both SCVMM and Self-Service Portal are to be placed on the same server)
  11. Log in Self-Service Portal as a Self-Service Portal??User??and start creating and managing VMs as permitted by the user???s User Roles

My host Machine is my Dell Precision 490 running Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V.  I know my video isn’t that long, setting up NIC teaming is not that hard.  Please let me know if you have any questions.
