From what I see on the MS site, moving a DPM 2010 install between domains is not supported, similar to OpsMgr 2007 in the same situation.

Backup and restore replicas with tsm agent

I'm with a customer who has a IBM 3494 Library which is not recognized by DPM because the driver doesn't expose the library as media changer device.

Because of that we want to create short term backups of our Hyper-V VMs to tape. We want to backup the DPM replicas to tape using the TSM agent.

As far as I know the TSM Agent supports VSS.

I found documentation how to backup the replicas but not on how to restore them (without rebuilding the whole dpm server)

Can anyone give me a step by step guide?

Hi,

You should never restore 3rd party tape backup of DPM replica except for disaster recovery senario. If you restore data from tape to a replica volume that was not missing and rebuilt, then two bad things can potentially happen. 1) The recovery point volume will most likely fill up since you are replacing all the files on the replica by overwriting them. VSS is going to have to move all the original file data to the recovery point volume in order to maintain shadow copies. 2) If a consistency check is NOT ran after the restore from tape outside of DPM completes, then the next synchronization will change blocks on the older restored files that don't match the files on the protected server, and unrecoverable corruption will occur.

The only two DR senarios are:

1) You lost the whole DPM server and the all of the disks in the storage pool. In that case, you follow the documentation you have.

2) One or more of the DPM storage pool disks failed. In that case, you have to:

a. Manually delete all the failed NTFS volumes in Windows disk management (or using diskpart.exe) - then rescan the DPM storage pool disks.
DO NOT remove the missing disk(s) in the DPM storage pool.
b. You need to get the links to the various data source replica volumes that are missing by running this sql command from an administrative command prompt:

osql -E -S localhost\MSDPM2010 -d DPMDB -Q "select ag.NetbiosName, ds.DataSourceName, vol.MountPointPath from tbl_IM_DataSource as ds join tbl_PRM_LogicalReplica as lr on ds.DataSourceId=lr.DataSourceId join tbl_AM_Server as ag on ds.ServerId=ag.ServerId join tbl_SPM_Volume as vol on lr.PhysicalReplicaId=vol.VolumeSetID and vol.Usage = 1 and and lr.Validity = 3 order by ag.NetbiosName"

c. Replace the physical disk(s) and add the new disks into the DPM storage pool, then run dpmsync -reallocatereplica followed by DPMSYNC -SYNC to remake the missing volumes.
d. Restore the replica volume data from tape backup for just the rebuilt replicas using the output of the SQL script as your restore guide.
e. Run a consistency check to get the volume back into a healthy state so scheduled backups can continue.

DPM 2012 Beta - No 2010 agent upgrades?

I noticed the agents did not let me upgrade them from 2010 in this iteration. Is that something that may be available later? So far I like the new look but it is taking some getting used to :)

Hi,

I am using DPM 2010 and working fine in my network. I am having one issue i.e. i want to delete recovery points from the protection groups. as i am running out of space in the drive.

One of protection groups is having 3 recovery points but i dont want to delete the protection group and all the recovery points, i want to delete old recovery points in that group. Protection group i am using it is working fine. I want some space from by delting these recovery points.

Is there any option for deleting the same? if there is any scripit for delting, please help me.

DPM 2007SP1 white papers, books

Hi

I' ve been asked to implement DPM 2007SP1. DPM seems a little light on books or M/S whitepapers compared to the likes of SCOM. I Was wondering if there where any more books written on the product then the Sybex one. I have the main Technet link. Is there an unleashed book?

I think the simplest thing in your case might be to run a Powershell script to dump the last recovery point to disk daily, backup and then clean up after backup to tape. We used DPM 2007 in this way with a third party backup product to facilitate site-to-site disaster recovery outside the confines of what DPM is capable of for a customer.

Hello Sameer,

DPM does not backup SCVMM natively however you can have a look at this TechNet article for the proper way to backup SCVMM: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb963730.aspx . You could then setup DPM manually to protect the necessary SCVMM components. Also here is another post on backing up SCVMM: http://www.aidanfinn.com/?p=10250 .

Custom Reporting on DPM2007

Hi,
I try to customise a personal report.
For example send only the page 2 of the status report.
Or create a new one with Tape Info + Status info.
I found that we can use a SQL table in Appendix C: Custom Report Views
but how to implement this.

Hi All,

I have Installed DPM 2010 in my Production Environment Last week. Its working fine.

Here I have dought, I Given Retension Range 3 Days, and Replica will be Create Daily Basises, and the Storage Pool Size is 55 GB and Data Size is 35 GB. So how the data Grooming is happening.

Hi All,

I got the soluction for Grooming the data in DPM 2010. The steps below...

The data Grooming is deffence upon your assining Retension Range, Once the Retension Range is exceeded, the Old Data will be Groom. E.g

If you Assign Retension Range 3 Days, and DPM 2010 Will take backup Continusly up to 6th day, 7 Day Morning Old 3 Date data will be Groom Automatically. So This Retension Range is helping us to save the Disk space.
