I was reading a short blog post and it talks about the Discovery Wizard and "agents as proxies" on subnets without a management server. Specifically, it says
"For subnets that do not have their own management server, you can setup SCOM agents as proxies to do the broadcast for you. Basically you just select one PC that will always be powered on and mark it as a proxy inside operation manager console - very simple."
That doesn't seem right to me. What am I missing here - can agents act as proxies for other agents? I knew this was possible for SNMP-enabled devices, but thought it stopped there.
Read the article HERE.

Tommy,
I see your point. You can specify an OpsMgr agent as a proxy for one or more network devices, but agents do not act as proxies for other agents - that's called a gateway as you well know. I suspect the author maybe just skipped the proofreading phase when writing this article.

It's more like he skipped the "Am I talking bulls**t?"-phase.
However, that article is "ancient" and it more looks like he was trying to learn something by trying to explain it to others. Besides that he's obviously not that much into SCOM, and understanding the proxy function is not that trivial.

You may need a new keyboard, it appears that some of the letters have not come out!

Stop being polite and tell us what you really think! I think you've hit on the core problem there. How ancient would it have to be in order to not be wrong?

I honestly just didn't take it that serious as it looks like recycled information he grabbed from somewhere else. Besides that he did around 150 blog posts where 3 were about SCOM.
However, what he said there doesn't make any sense to me and I don't really know what he meant there. Agents doing some broadcasts... for what?
Didn't Simon look for an Interview Candidate? :D
Anyway, I think I know from where he ripped it off:
"The Discovery Wizard can find and set up systems for agentless management. The process is almost the same as for deploying. You do, however, have to select a proxy for each agentless-managed system. A proxy is a system with an agent that is used to monitor an agentless system. A management group can serve as a proxy, but this takes up system resources. A best practice is using an agent-managed system as a proxy."
However, I don't like that guy's blog. He writes like he had all these great ideas and now he shares his knowledge with you but it's basically just a summary of some documentation he read. Who else would say something like:
"I always recommend advanced discovery."
What's funny though is, check his comments:
"Rahul sorry I'm not SCCM certified. I don't like posting in area's I'm unsure about"
Maybe I should stop posting here until I am SCOM certified as well.
