All, I am trying to figure out how to create a Windows 2008 VM template using Virtual Machine Manager 2008. When I try to do this with a powered off Windows 2008 VM, all I get is an immediate "Sysprep failed".
Has anyone already done this or know of a resource to give me a quick education in how to make this happen? I've been googling and reading for 20 minutes already and not really getting to the information I need.
Tommy, all you have to do is supply a value for Name, Password, and License fields when you run the Create Template wizard. If any of these were missing, you would receive an explicit error message asking for a value.
If the create template process fails immediately when run from within VMM 2008 Admin Console, you answer is almost certainly Virtual Guest Servies. To fix this, select the VM and then click the 'Install Virtual Guest Services' in the Action pane.
Then with the virtual machine powered down, try again and I bet sysprep from within VMM 2008 works for you.
That was the problem! I loaded Virtual Guest Services and template creation in VMM Admin Console worked. VMM sure did not give me a very intuitive error message.
For some reason, I thought those services were installed by default?
