I am trying to understand if Exchange database availability monitoring actually requires the test mailboxes (disabled user accounts) created by the Exchange MP Configuration Wizard. Does anyone know for sure what we must do here? We don't need any of the synthetic transaction monitoring functions, so Exchange admin would like to skip creating those test mailboxes if it can be avoided.

Yes you can skip the mailbox monitoring. for the second time today an old doc I wrote come out of the shadows http://www.systemcentercentral.com/BlogDetails/tabid/143/IndexID/12977/Default.aspx . In this wizard you can disable certain parts of the Exchnage monitoring

I am not sure I follow. This document you reference explains what to select (wish it explained a bit more about WHY to make those selections). So are you saying if I disable mailflow monitoring, the MP Wizard will not try to create these test mailboxes?

The wizard does not 'create' the mailboxes you can create or select an existing mailbox. But we can miss out the whole mailbox monitoring thing if we choose.

Why do we want to monitor and make selections is a question of need. In my experience monitor all bar the mail boxes and Mobile sync. But rather create a nice Distributed Application of the mail server, routers and firewall monitoring the core services of the Exchange server, port 25 going out, DNS internal and external and AD access (which is covered in the Exchange MP). So now we can get a low level but simple map of the mail infrastucture.
