Enough report models to make custom reporting an easy task with minimal need for Visual Studio.

Challenge: Report authoring is difficult in OpsMgr

Solution: Provide more report models for admins and authors to use to build reports.

Again, anything to make report authoring easier is a win in my book.

I think report models in OpsMgr 2007 are definitely another useful tool for extracting trending data (and great for creating ad-hoc event reports). To answer the need here, report models should be:

  • Available for each data type (alert, state, event, performance)
  • Delivered with examples. Creating a matrix-type report or a chart is not as simple as it seems
  • Simplified data presentation in the model interface. Perhaps the SDK View equivalent (in MOM 2005 speak) would help to address this issue.
  • Delivered with some publishing options for the output.

Guidance is needed in this area today. At this time, we only have two models (event and performance) and no good working examples of how to produce compelling output.
